Meetings


The programme of monthly evening meetings are normally held on the first Tuesday each month, and includes demonstrations, criticisms and lectures.


2017

10th January - Painting animals by Sonia Bacchus
A return visit for Sonia. This time she will be painting animals using acrylic

7th February - Linear Pastels with Max Hale
A first visit to the guild and a different approach to pastel drawing

Followed by a social gathering with refreshments

4th April - Critique evening with Roy Rogers
Please bring up to 2 of your paintings for review

2nd May - Line and wash with Paul Alcock
A demonstration of line and wash techniques by this versatile Southend based artist

6th June - Hand made watercolour paper with Jim Patterson
The story behind the making of watercolour paper by hand.

4th July - The growing use of Resins in Artwork
Please bring a few pieces of art that you wish to see coated in resin or finished off with our range of photo-luminescent ( glow in the dark ) pigments.

5th September - Portrait session with Rob Wareing
A return visit for Rob who will be painting a live subject in oil or pastelA return visit for Rob who will be painting a live subject in oil or pastel

3rd October - Vibrant painting with Hashim Akab
His second visit to the guild with another demonstration of his loose, colourful, dynamic style

7th November - Landscape in oils - Roy Rogers
Another demonstration by this local artist

2nd February - Abstract/Impressionism- Marilyn Comparetto
Marilyn Comparetto - visual artist of 45 years standing. Working across most mediums and subject matters - experimenting across the boundaries.

1st March - Guild AGM – followed by refreshments
Your opportunity to talk with your committee members to review and help formulate all guild related issues.

5th April - Fantasy Watercolour - Sharon Hurst
Sharon specialises in the art of layering colours, and glazing techniques. Please pack your imagination and bring it along with you for a couple of hours of sheer unadulterated escapism (she says).

3rd May - Computers and art - Fred Howett
Fred will demonstrate his use of the computer in art and with the guild website. He will also give an insight into how colour vision works.


7th June - Townscape in Watercolour - Keith Hornblower
Keith is now established as a leading architectural illustrator in watercolour and was awarded Fellowship of the Society of Architectural Illustration. He will demonstrate painting a townscape in watercolour.


5th July - Preparing canvases Sonia Bacchus
A return visit for Sonia. This time she will describe techniques for preparing new or recycled canvases.

 

6th September - Portrait in pastels RobWareing
Rob returns for another masterclass in portrait painting

4th October - Figures in a Landscape Alex Roch
Alex will demonstrate adding figures to a landscape/seascape using water soluble oil paints

1st November - Caricatures Simon Ellinas
Guild member Simon Elans will demonstrate how to create recognisable caricatures

3rd February - Watercolour demonstration with James Willis
James has a BA Hons in Fine Art & Music as well as an MA in the history of art. He takes his inspiration from everyday scenes within an architectural setting. He tries to capture the play of colour and light in people and buildings and his pictures are instantly recognisable with the bold dynamic brushstrokes al conveying a sense of activity to his artwork.

7th April - Colour Mixing with Ali Cochrean
Ali Cockrean is a successful expressionist painter. She regularly exhibits her abstract work throughout the country. Her work already appears in collections across Europe, the US and Canada. Most of Ali Cockrean’s work is in acrylic on large and small scale canvases. Ali has also worked in oils, pastels and charcoal at Slade School of Fine Art. In this second visit to the Guild she gives us her take on colour mixing.

5th May - Impressions of flowers with Sonia Bacchus
Sonia gained a masters degree in Fine Art at her home town university of Lodz in Poland. She likes to emulate the techniques of the old masters but bringing them up to date using modern materials. In this her third visit she will demonstrate painting impressions of flowers using acrylics

2nd June - Charcoal portrait with Peter Keegan
An award winning professional artist specializing in portraiture and landscape. Peter will draw a head and shoulders portrait from life, sharing tips and suggestions on capturing a sitter using charcoal.

7th July - Landscape in oil with Roy Rodgers
Roy was a senior lecturer at Harrow School of Art until 1985. He then worked as a sculpture in the British film industry. He now paints full time and his work can be seen in numerous private and public collections. He likes to paint landscapes of Suffolk inspired by the unique light and big skies.

1st September - Portrait in oil with Rob Wareing
Always popular with the guild, Rob makes another return visit to demonstrate his approach to portrait painting in oils.

6th October - Encaustic wax with Phil Madely
Phil is a very talented designer who creates his designs in wax using a variety of household appliances including the domestic iron, hot air paint stripper, and soldering irons. A very different and interesting evening.

3rd November - Landscape with Watercolour and pen by Joanna Stone
Joanna has a degree in Fine Art and a post graduate art teachers certificate from Goldsmiths College. She has 30 years experience in painting and has work is in several private collections.

Mike’s evenings are always popular with members. Please bring a piece of art (completed or in progress) with you for discussion.

4 February - Water Soluble Pencils - Alex Roche
Alex works in a wide range of media and is deeply rooted in the belief that drawing is the basis of creativity. She studied at the City of London Art College. Since leaving she has painted full time and exhibited extensively in London, France and Monaco in both mixed and solo shows.

4 March - AGM

Note: due to unforseen circumstances, the meetings planned for April and June with Ali Cochran and Sarah Janavicius have had to be interchanged.

8 April- Textured Collage - Sarah Janavicius
Sarah took up full-time employment with British Aerospace as a trainee illustrator/graphic designer and studied A-level in Fine Art at Stevenage College. In 1981 she emigrated to Sydney where she worked as a technical artist. Her paintings are influenced by her background experience as a graphic designer and ten years exploring Australia which have given her a bright and bold style of her own.

6 May - Portrait in mixed media - Sonia Bacchus
Sonia Bacchus stepped into the breach at short notice last year and used a combination of acrylics and oils to demonstrate some of the techniques of the old masters. This year she will be applying these techniques to a portrait in mixed media.

3 June - Mixed Media - Ali Cochran
Many of you will remember Ali’s demonstration last year when she showed her fascinating technique of applying acrylic paint using small pieces of cloth instead of brushes. This time she will cover; an introduction to Abstraction, breaking down barriers, and creating harmony in your paintings.

8 July - Seascape in watercolour - Denise Allen
Denise paints in oils and watercolours and takes her inspiration from landscapes, seascapes and the natural world. Completely fascinated by the sea and the ever changing surface of the water, she aims to create truly beautiful realistic paintings.

August - No event

2 Sept - Pastel Portrait - Rob Wareing
Professional artist for thirty years, exhibiting and painting portraits in many parts of the world. Lives in South Africa but spends the Summers in England painting, demonstrations and workshops.

7 October - Animals in Watercolour - Glynis Barnes-Mellish
Studied and taught at St Albans School ofArt.
Glynis focuses her attention on the creation of form through the build up of colour and detail wash by wash.


4 November - Still Life in Pastel - Stephen Hand
Stephen studied art and design at Medway College of Art and Canterbury College of Art. He paints mostly English and French coastal and countryside scenes. He exhibits widely from Hampstead to Germany.

2013

8 January - Pastel - Tiffany Budd
Trained at Wimbledon School of Art and University of Plymouth. Tiffany paints in various styles and is inspired by Georgia O’Keefe and Russian constructionism, which she uses in her contemporary floral paintings. She describes her technique as ‘Fractured’ semi-abstract.
Tiffany has had to cancel due to unforseen circumstances. Fortunately Heather Joliffe has stepped into the breach and will be demonstrating differences between soft and oil pastels.

5 February - Water Colour/Fruit & Vegetables - David Lewry
Trained at St Martins School of Art. Diploma in Botanical Illustration and awarded RHS Silver medal. A very talented demonstrator using advanced technology, which allows his practical demonstrations to be projected and seen by the entire group. Runs his own Diploma Course in Botanical Illustration in Bedford.

7 May - Techniques with Acrylic - Ali Cockrean Sonia Bacchus - Techniques of the masters
Ali Cockrean is a successful expressionist painter who regularly exhibits her abstract work throughout the country. Her demonstration to the Guild last year of ‘expressionistic’ painting was extremely well received. This time she will demonstrate different ways of using acrylics.
Ali has had to cancel due to unforseen circumstances. We are fortunate that Sonia Bacchus has stepped into the breach at short notice and will be using both acrylics and oils to demonstrate some of the techniques of the old masters.


4 June - Acrylic Street scene - Hashim Akib
Illustrated for various newspapers also BA, Smirnoff, Royal Mail, and Nissan. He has exhibited at the Mall Galleries, Thompson Gallery, McNeill Gallery. Published book April 2012 – Vibrant Acrylic. Hashim has won numerous awards including SAA Professional Artist 2007.

2 July - Mixed media - Liz Seward Relfe
Liz is a professional artist who has been painting and drawing all her life. She is a renowned teacher and has spent over thirty years tutoring and inspiring other artists at all levels. Her paintings are well known for their subtle atmosphere and use of colour and are much sought after by collectors.

10 January - Seascape, Acrylic - Heather Joliffe
Heather is a professional fine artist, with 26 years experience of teaching and demonstrating. She has worked for many organisations and exhibits widely.

7 February - Egg Tempera - Mick Kirkbride
Mick is a painter from the North East of England working within a figurative vernacular. He studied Fine Art at Sunderland Polytechnic and was a member of a studio group based in Newcastle-Upon–Tyne. He moved to London in 1992 to undertake Post-graduate study in painting at one of the ‘Royal Academy Schools’, and in 2004 was elected a member of ‘The New English Art Club’.

1 May - Abstract Impressionism in mixed media - Ali Cockrean
Ali Cockrean is a successful expressionist painter who regularly exhibits her abstract work throughout the country. Her work already appears in collections across Europe, the US and Canada. She is considered to be 'one to watch' on the contemporary art scene.

19 June - Portrait in oils - Rob Wareing (rescheduled from 5 June)
Rob has been a professional artist for thirty years exhibiting and painting portraits in many parts of the world.

3 July - Pastel landscape with water - Derek Daniels

Derek is a professional artist and exhibits widely. He is particularly concerned with the play of light on form.

4 September - Mosaic - Cathy Ebbels

Her demonstrations include a brief history of mosaics and a practical demonstration of design, glass cutting, and creating a mosaic.

2 October - Airbrush - David Boxshall
David is a commercial illustrator in the digital field but uses airbrush for his own compositions.

6 November - Garden landscape in oils- Melanie Cambridge

Works mainly outdoors and her favourite subjects tend to include water.

Brian is an artist, author and tutor who last visited us in 1999. He normally completes three paintings during a demo, so this evening will be a ‘must’ for all watercolourists.- click to see photos from the demonstration

Mike is a portrait, figure and still life painter, who uses traditional oil painting techniques influenced by the Old Masters. His demonstration will illustrate the methods he employs, talking issues such as pose, tone, materials and glazing.

Celia is a self-taught artist who works in pastel, acrylics, inks and mixed media as well as watercolour. She specialises in portraits, but also enjoys painting still life and flowers.

4 OCTOBER - Chinese Brush Painting - Jean Turton
Jean has been teaching this type of painting throughout the UK for over fifteen years. She has visited China twice to paint with Chinese artists, and attended a course at the Chinese Academy of Arts. She enjoys passing on her enthusiasm and love of art to all.

1 NOVEMBER - All about paper - Jim Patterson
Jim Patterson is owner and operator of the Two Rivers Paper Company. Jim gives a lively and informative talk on his hand-made paper, covering aspects such as differences between rag and wood pulp papers, absorbency, surface texture, stretching, coloured paper, right and wrong sides, and value for money. He will introduce a new product, ‘Bistre’, and show a video clip of his paper mill. A range of paper will be on sale at heavily discounted prices.
